Texas Rangers’ Player Suffers Alcohol Addiction Relapse

Fame, fortune and career success, what more could an American League MVP hope for? In the case of Texas Rangers’ outfielder Josh Hamilton, a few drinks had to be added to the mix.

Unfortunately, according to this ABC News report, Hamilton has battled addictions to alcohol and drugs for more than a decade and this latest move was a relapse. Hamilton has been clean, but in a weak moment, he chose alcohol as he tried to deal with personal issues.

Hamilton did take responsibility for his actions, reporting the incident to his team and to Major League Baseball. As a result, he was subject to two drug tests. Additional plans include his meeting with league doctors in New York.

Stressing that he is committed to being clean and staying sober, Hamilton agreed that he cannot take a break from recovery. The relapse, however, is not his first. The 30-year-old Ranger was photographed drinking in a bar in 2009. At the time, Hamilton insisted it was his first drink since vowing to stay sober in 2005.

Promises Treatment Centers’ Chief Executive Officer, Dr. David Sack, told ABC that such stumbles are not uncommon among addicts, whether they are celebrities or not. He stressed that most people who achieve the goal of long-term sobriety fail a number of times along the way.

An athlete, stressed Dr. Sack, has a strong motivation in place to stay the course in recovery. For Hamilton, his career and livelihood are dependent upon his ability to stay clean. According to Dr. Sack, athletes do remarkably well with treatment.

Those surrounding Hamilton were committed to his success as well. After his relapse in 2009, an accountability partner was identified to support him during the season, teammates stopped drinking in front of him and even postseason celebrations included ginger ale and water instead of the traditional champagne.
